Summer Fun in the Garden The La Farge school garden came alive this summer with students working to help make the plants grow and helping to eat the garden's early bounty. The K-1st grade group planted sunflowers and marigolds and helped to mulch the bell pepper plants with straw. They also painted rocks for the garden and worked on a mural that will be made into a little table for the garden space. The 2nd-3rd grade group made tepees out of sticks and planted pole beans, helped mulch around the tomatoes and went on an edible plant scavenger hunt. They also were able to spend time with some chicks that one parent brought in from the farm, thank you Emily! The 4th-6th grade group planted zinnias, helped mulch around the melons and also worked on the mural and went on an edible plant scavenger hunt. The next time you see them eating a plant growing out of the sidewalk, don't worry! They have strong plant identification skills when it comes to pigweed and lambsquarters. It was such a fun adventure to spend time in the garden together. Hopefully we will be having a garden party later this summer, stay tuned! Thanks to all the teachers who helped us in the garden. It was wonderful to have you there! Sincerely, Jessie Ferraro Americorps Farm to School Member
